Suggested Title: Absolutely Clueless - River of Thought
or “ Brain Waves and Me “

Begin:  Probably one of the greatest insults among sophisticated folks is to be labeled “absolutely clueless.” But if you were absolutely clueless you would not be asleep.

Being asleep and distracted you think you have some clues.  No you don’t. I understand that you think you do.

The things I mention to you folks are things I find useful. The terms ‘awakening’ and ‘enlightenment’ are terms that are not so cut and dried. In the beginning it gives you the feeling that there is something to study. Labeling yourself as someone seeking to awaken, to work on yourself, etc. is the only place to start and I don’t see any way to bypass that.

05:00  But I discovered if you believe you are studying your “sleeping self”, your dumb self, this belief has a built in limitation: you will never have the Realization.

Don’t get me wrong, “What works for you, works for you.”  and if you hear anything here that verbally seems to contradict with what works for you, then go with yours.

You folks know how obscure and rare all this is. But its not about being awake or enlightened. There is no “you or me” that is “awake or asleep.”  That is the limitation , at the heart, of the terms awake and asleep.

The term “realization” cuts out the “you or me” that may have flashes of states that appear to be a proper state, of being awake (ex. no bad thoughts, empty headed) but again, I don’t see any other way to start.

10:00  Religions and myths use the term “fallen from grace” when one is not in the proper state. The ordinary self assumes it is two different people. (ex. bad thoughts v. good thoughts)

Recognizing the distracted, sleeping, ordinary state and saying “i recognized it and it shook me more awake again”, is thinking ‘I’ am getting somewhere. It is an illusion, but a “necessary illusion.”

The Realization blows the “necessary illusion” apart. Today’s description:  All you have going on in the brain are simply two different states “brain waves” and the “me” created when you are not simply flowing with the brain waves.

15:00  Let’s say everyone’s brain waves are slightly different, (it doesn’t matter) but when you are in the brain waves and there is no you, assuming that your aim is to awaken, that is what folks like us call being asleep.

There is in a sense “no me” in any of us. There is no me until I think about it and interfere with the waves going on. Surely you folks know what I am talking about. It does not matter what you think about, but do it willfully, to interfere. It’s not allegory. The rest of the time, what I call thinking, is not thinking, it’s just automatic brain waves.

Brain waves are like a river in which we all live - or a river that lives in all of us. A collective river, maybe with our own individual tributaries. It’s a “river of thought” that you have absolutely nothing to do with it.

Thoughts just flow thru everyone’s brain. And in that state there is “no me.” No one notices it, and it does no harm. It is only when the brainwaves are in the past do you label it the “sleeping state.”

20:00  When folks like us become aware of the brain waves replaying something worrisome, and we say “stop it” (even the ordinary person can do that) and if we continue with “I was just asleep, I got to stop it” that little comment just puts you back in the flow of the brain waves. You cease to exist.  You don’t know it because you are not there. Like Batman and Bruce Wayne, not only are they never there together, Batman never turns around and says,” Where’s Bruce ?”

The brain waves are not a bad me, or a sleeping me. There is no me. The only time there is a “me” is when I know there’s a “me.” It is as though the “me” is amidst the brain waves and its is up to you to extract it. That was my beginning view of it.

The operational truth, when there is a “me” (awareness of the brainwaves) the bullshit stops. As soon as you catch yourself asleep, you are no longer asleep. But it has taken decades to realize you are back asleep before you know it. There is no way TO know it - because when you are Batman, you don’t know you are Batman.

25:00  It requires effort for there to be a “me.” Brain waves are not a curse, but the natural state. And to not be in that state was unnatural. I could see reasons that life would not want us aware of the brain waves. (ex. no culture, civilization)

When people reminisce or complain, they know there is a me, but it is actually just the moment of switching from brain waves to me they enjoy. I see the “me’ as a distinct function of the brain that life produces throughout the day, but it cannot sustain itself.

30:00  The “me” amidst the brain waves is not arranged to sustain itself. It is a rogue operation of the brain, compared to what is necessary in keeping civilization and culture stable.

It is only this “me” that has the potential to awaken.  The brain suppresses it. If I could stop an ordinary person, stop reality, allegorically, when he switched from “brain waves to me” I could point out things about life, that I point out to you folks, that ordinary people never see.

37:00  Brain waves always return to brain waves. Brain waves go on day and night, and it is the only place there is a “me”.

There are only two states, “brain waves and me.” Forget that one is right and one is wrong, or one is asleep and one is awake. That allows you to see the possibility of “me.” Ordinary people would rather talk about “me.”

The ordinary brain is not trying to understand itself. A man may say his greatest joy is playing chess. But ask him how he got started playing chess and he (the “I”, the “me”) will tell you the story of his life.

40:00  The brain wants to talk about “me.” Why? Because at that moment, the brain goes from “brain waves to me,” for a split second. It is still enjoyable to realize that in my head, with no terms about being awake, asleep, or understanding anything.

That is it.  Just realizing that, on my own, was so beneficial I can’t even tell you.

Suggested Title: Life - Scrambled or the Omlette Itself

Begin:  For anything in life to make sense, you have to make comparisons. To even talk you must be cutting up reality, by making comparisons. The comparisons, intentional or unintentional, makes no difference.

One word has to be capable of making comparisons to a second word or nothing makes sense. It is the way we communicate. It is the way symbols work. The word ‘chair’ for example makes a picture.

Cutting up life is the only way talk works. At any rate, there is another way all this strikes me. It goes in a completely opposite direction of how scrambled life is. Specifically, a guy talking about his Mom’s dying wish.

05:00  Picture this guy considering his Mom’s dying wish to be buried by her husband. It is kind of nice, it is going to be costly, (he may be buried in another country) but it is kind of silly.

It is kind of silly because when you are dead, you don’t know where you are buried. The ordinary mind may say you are wrong because her spirit will know. But you will never understand anything if you consider the supernatural.

And it has nothing to do with rather the supernatural (ex. life after death) is true or false.  Nobody knows if there is life after death. There is no evidence of life after death. And no one can stop you from believing it if you want to.

The point is if “your mind” is satisfied to operate with the belief in the supernatural (ex. God, Life after Death etc.) you won’t be any worse off, and you are not crazy, and you are not dumb.  And you deserve no criticism.

But the danger in accepting the belief, and operating with the belief, (ex. life after death) is that you will never understand or see anything. Assuming you folks are following this, you may go with your Mom’s wishes.

But you would question to yourself, that its kind of silly and strange to go to all the expense and effort, to go with your Mom’s wishes because “my mom will never know.”

10:00 So “whats going on?” Back to the point of how scrambled life is, there is a reality to moving those bones, but by any reasonable view, there is no intellectual point to doing it. Not that its wrong to do it.

Were not here to criticize the act, but from any reasonable view its a useless act. (ex. You are moving a pile of bones from one location to another.) I’m not criticizing, just looking.

15:00 It is one of those things in life that is mish mash. So why does life have the human mind doing that, when there is no evidence to support the reason to do it. That is somewhat disingenuous of me to say Life has the human mind doing such and such.  There is another quite glaring and startling possibility.  That being the possibility that Life is not doing something TO man’s mind…..

Suggested Title: Man Invents Cultures that Need Fixing

Begin:  Considering consciousness and talk, I can’t resist pointing out a little something else on the subject of a stranger from another planet seeing only talk going on within the planet’s most important institutions.  Institutions with big buildings like the Pentagon, the Capital or the Vatican.

I was thinking how anyone with a natural gift to talk or write could walk in unannounced into the pentagon or Congress and listen for five or ten minutes and could come up with something utterly frightening to write about.  (symbolically, metaphorically)

05:00  And then remembering and picturing (we are still talking consciousness and talk) that nothing is going on in the most important institutions on the planet but talk.  And that anytime, day or night, a writer could gather a story in 5 minutes or less that when published in the papers would make his readers tremble.

Another facet of this picture is for you to imagine that you are on top of a magical mountain and you can see all of humanity and then I ask you to answer this question: “ What is Man doing? “

I suggest to you that people are always trying to fix something. Hospitals an Doctors are trying to fix something. In an auto garage it is obvious, so lets move on to something more subtle and look at the important institutions, like Congress and the Pentagon.  Remember that all that is going on is talk, but what  they are trying to do is fix something.

10:00  Look at the money and effort politicians and Congress spend to fix stuff. And then remember they are just talking to fix stuff. That is the first stage, where you might take it in and think you need a beer or a cold towel - but now the second stage.

15:00  Looking out at life, people are continually trying to fix stuff. And there are two tributaries to fixing stuff. The first tributary is man is continually trying to fix stuff that man broke. The more civilized the setting, the more time you spend fixing stuff collectively.

Living in the jungle, you may only have the occasional bow and arrow to fix.  Civilized societies have environmental protection laws, tax laws, national defense, etc. And criminals keep finding new ways to break them.

20:00  For example Congress passed laws to prevent another Enron fraud. But by the time they passed the law other criminals and swindlers are already moving on to a different fraud. And the attorneys are figuring ways for their clients to walk away.

25:00  The common man tries to fix stuff that man broke by bitching and whining. So the point of the first tributary is humanity is always trying to fix something that Man broke. Man initially got together to fix man’s unruly behavior.

There must be a thousand volumes, thousand pages each, of the criminal justice code. But as soon as a law is made, man figures out a way around it. For example murder, if the victim doesn’t die, you have to fix the law by inventing the charge of manslaughter, and the lesser charge of assault and so on.  Man made it and man has to continually fix it.

30:00  The second tributary has to do with culture. Set aside the physical and technological inventions of Man.  Consider everything that man has created for culture; religion, art, literature, criminal law, etc.)  Every feature of culture: man is continually working to fix some part of it.

Which leads to the second tributary: that everything man creates is already broken.  (not saying he means to do it that way) Consider: Could you create, on your own, a religion that would not need repairs immediately?

Pick out any cultural creation (ex. government, criminal law, psychology, sociology, etc.) that has a form, outline, theorems, and consider/picture that as soon as it is created - doesn’t need fixing.

35:00 If you are in a civilized setting, and picture, maybe looking down at the people in Paris, Rome, pretty much anywhere, what do people spend most of their time doing? They are mostly trying to fix stuff, intangible stuff.

A broken car and a broken knee will get your attention. But what I am trying to get you folks to consider is “Can man create anything cultural (criminal law, government, etc.) that doesn’t come into creation already broken?”

Broken is probably not the best word. How can you break something that does does not physically exist?

Suggested Title: Picturing Consciousness without Talk

Begin: Picture/Consider what consciousness would be without talk. According to thinking and the dictionary they are two separate things. Imagine that you are conscious but that man has no speech.

Tonight, a few things that go on in life that no one notices and I have been talking about the last few weeks.  Man is the only species (just me talking, not a quote) whose leaders do not lead them directly into battle.

Every other social creature,  rather herds or packs (ex wolves)  when protecting territory or hunting are lead physically by the alpha male/female.  Solitary creatures hunt alone. Human leaders make announcements and point.

05:00  So just pointing it out, why is humanity so different?  It is easy to see the alpha male, in a political tyrant that may kill, rob, and murder his way to the top. It can even be seen in watered down versions in so-called democracies.

Man is the only social creature, who lives like a herd, that the leader does not physically lead the country into war.  Every other creature the alpha male/female physically leads. That is why the others defer to him/her.

10:00  Consider an alien visitor from another planet, that could communicate with humanity, and it was humanity’s job to point out the important stuff that is exemplary of humanity.

You could take him on an aerial view of the important institutions/buildings. For example the Capitol (politics), the Vatican (religious), Wall Street (wealth) and the Pentagon (military) but all he sees when he looks are humans talking.

15:00  So what makes “you” you? What is going on in your head?  Your consciousness does not hesitate to describe feelings and thoughts. But it all comes from the talking/conscious part of the brain. Some call it their personality.

20:00  If you look at “what’s going on” in the conscious/talking part of the brain, which you can only do after the fact, it (CPOB) becomes the looker and whatever it (CPOB) was doing stops.

A split second ago the brain was bitching about how stupid humans are, but if you can hold “this is the brain speaking” you are no longer aggressive in the purely human sense. You no longer have second reality ambitions. (ex. rich and famous)

Man’s normal state of consciousness, your natural state has been putting out the same thoughts, pictures, fears and annoyance since you were fifteen years old. And when you realize this; (not trying to talk you into it)

25:00  It is the same story and the same whine. If you try the approach (Brain speaking), I don’t know of one closer to the bone of all this. It is stripped of the metaphysical and superfluous.

In essence, what’s going on in your head, “you” is the CPOB running automatically. And it is quite sufficient (automatic running). You can do your job, be a good husband and wife, or a soldier or a stockbroker.

When you can see the CPOB (conscious part of brain) speaking it changes everything. You can no longer get as upset/annoyed for any length of time, by other people’s stupidity.

When you have the full realization of what consciousness is in everybody, the juices of annoyance/other peoples stupidity is gone. If you are not making supernatural effort, constantly, the CPOB just goes back to its normal state.

30:00  When “you” (probably shouldn’t say “you”) become aware of lapsing back into the ordinary, automatic, yammering of the CPOB, and you catch it after the fact, and say CPOB speaking, the yammering is different.

It is easy to fall back into the mechanical/ordinary state. It just takes another comment from another ordinary/ mechanical CPOB (conscious part of the brain) comment. (ex. something political)

These ordinary/mechanical whining, yammering commentaries trick your consciousness. Saying “CPOB speaking” (internally) after the fact, after the awareness of the whining commentary,  helps to bring you back to consciousness.

It changes the way you look at everyone else.  It is as though you are surrounded by zombies, ( you come up with a better term ), but you can no longer hold them responsible for what they say. You can’t. It is not a theory.  You might slip back to habitual whining, but there is no power behind it.  And hearing yourself sound like a sloth speaking helps to bring you back.

The downside, maybe a serious illness, surgery, and you look up at the surgeon and he says “Don’t you worry.”

Added notes on Jan Cox Talk 0110

There are more than 5 main branches of the talks that Jan gave and each I (derek) talk about here is based on the nature of the audience.  ANY division is illusory.

Before talk 138, Jan was talking to the people in the room and new people on both coasts.

At  138 we started video taping them

At some point a year later, he started talking on many levels at once; to a random audience on cable TV; the new people on the coasts and in the room and to the 'old group' in the room.  (Once you have heard all the tapes you might be able to see the symphony he is conducting)

And  and a year after that he limited his talks to 56 minutes at the request of the video editors.  He might talk longer, or put the Kyroots on a different tape if there were too many.  That material is only on the audio tapes.

In the 1200's Jan started a process of whittling it down and being a little more direct, much to the delight of many in the room.  By the 1400's the video camera is mostly off and Jan is getting down to brass tacks.  He is still nailing jello to the wall, but it appears to be doing more concisely rather than beating about the bushes to see what comes out.

So - lets take this division of five and look at talk 110.

The student is given a new term.  We go from Consider to Neuralize, adding an attempt at neutrality to the neural.  And then Jan launches into beating the bushes as he circles round and round what he talking about --> and it is up to the student to see what it is.  He is not talking about politics, not talking about B movies yet describing how each of these things must function within the context of external forces and internal habits --( as if there was a difference, (grin))

So enjoy Jan Cox Talk 0110, knowing that a live animus may coming charging out and devour , momentarily,  all that you thought you were.

Suggested Title:  The One Internal Illusion

Begin: I guess I will talk about something, but I’ve told you folks everything a person needs to know. But its either this or we would all be going out and getting into trouble. (ex. watching TV, etc.)

Consider the connection between talk and consciousness. Can you have consciousness without talk? What purpose does talk serve?  And since we have talk and consciousness can we conceive consciousness without talk?

Consider humanity, collectively, could it have developed civilization and technology without talk?  Think how long it would take cave man consciousness to describe the wheel without talk. It would be tedious.

05:00  Talk makes civilization and technology easier. With talk you can ask questions and clarify descriptions. Consider looking at talk from the individual level. What is the purpose of talk. (discount the passing of knowledge)

10:00  Picture cave man consciousness, maybe living alone, hunting, fishing, what purpose would talk serve? This is just me talking, no scientific evidence to back me up, just saying its not just opinion. (not ordinary views)

15:00  Fast forward from cave man consciousness to consciousness now. The conscious part of the brain works day and night. But would we know that consciousness goes on while we are asleep at night if there was no talking part of consciousness?

Everyday life, you know the conscious part of the brain is operating because you can hear the talk in your head.  Imagine cave man consciousness, and you can’t talk, what is the brain doing?

20:00  It is watching the environment and regulating/checking the internal organs. Same thing, at the very least, it does with all creatures that have anything resembling consciousness. So consider what does consciousness do today?

Technically the talking part of the brain’s yammering is monitoring the environment. It would be easy to say it’s the classic state of “being asleep/distracted.” Of course we are leaving out the comments on what it could be doing.

25:00  Picture driving down the highway, and seeing flashing lights and sirens. The non conscious part of the brain (regulation of internal organs) is already moving the feet towards the brakes before the talking part starts yammering like a trapped mouse in a box.

Picture cave man consciousness, a quick and brown flash in the bushes, (maybe a lion) the non conscious part of the brain reacts, (physical, and non verbal stimulation) before the talking part says that a lion could jump me.

30:00  The talking/conscious part of the brain keeps talking, while the non conscious begins to relax from the brown flash in the bushes. Maybe the caveman was picking berries ( instinct  cuts off hunger when physically threatened), but the mind keeps yammering on.  And once it gets started — it never seems to stop.

35:00  Consciousness is always working. Unless there is a bridge out, or a lion is about to jump you, the talking/conscious part of the brain (CPOB) is irrelevant. And it is almost impossible for the CPOB to see it.

Thoughts about others not being awake, suffering over thinking, worries over old insults (maybe an insult to your mother before she died), past fears, regrets, and “your mind” wants to work it all out, cleanse the mind - And the mind can not do any of that. And you can’t tell Consciousness that you can’t do those sorts of things, much less, that they are irrelevant.

40:00  But I keep telling you its not “your mind/my mind” Its the brain speaking. There is only one thing that will strip you of this “The Internal Illusion”. And you can’t describe it. I just got through trying. We don’t live in a world of illusions, we live with this One illusion and it is internal.

Everyone here, well,  it’s like you kind of look like the grill of an Edsel. Which is accidentally, a good symbolism for “my mind.” Edsel was an ugly, ill conceived, the manufacturer regretted he had ever designed it. And nobody wanted one.

There is only one way to see the one internal illusion. I once saw it piecemeal, and assume everyone would naturally. I am just trying to speed it up. Piecemeal insights into the one internal illusion can lead you to “this is the CPOB speaking.”

If you can hear that and then ,if you must hear something after that, its ok, and I can’t stop it. Wish I could. But once you can hear “this is CPOB speaking,” it takes the juice out of the one internal illusion. Because that is the illusion.  That there is something other than the CPOB ( Conscious part of the brain ) that is thinking, talking, caring , hoping.

45:00  Talking is primarily gossip. But it’s also the instinct forced to comment on the environment. It can go from the relevant to the irrelevant. (ex. man in Ad, Fred in a speedo, fat people in general, all people are stupid and ugly)..  You can figure out that that is a linear progression internally . . .
But if you can see its (CPOB) speaking, you wouldn’t have to figure anything out.

End(49:33)

Suggested Title: Eye Contact and One Trick Consciousness

Begin:  When everybody starts this activity (ex. some form of man is asleep and wants to awaken) they have a natural assumption (you can see, smell, and check it for yourself) that everyone in the group has a similar aim.

05:00  The cerebral cortex, the conscious part of the brain, surrounds the brain. Simply, what everyone calls “ you, I, my feelings, my brain, etc.” this one voice has one source and it’s  the conscious part of the brain.

“You” is not consciousness and “you” do not have thoughts. The conscious part of the brain does all that. Folks wishing to “wake up” if they apply themselves, may see the reality of that.

But it is damn near impossible to grab the reality of it The reality of it grabs itself. It comes down to realizing, all things intangible, go on in the cerebral cortex, not the soul, etc.

10:00  And the cerebral cortex, the conscious part of the brain, just runs. From the view, of folks like us, the mind is “out of control;” asleep, but to ordinary folks the mind runs just fine and that’s the attitude consciousness is born with.

15:00  As soon as you became conscious, the conscious part of the brain created “you.” The sensation of “you” is just there so created/made up, are just words for lack of better words. Putting a name on stuff gives you a place to start.

The conscious part of the brain has never been outside the conscious part of the brain. There is nobody in the CPOB. If you keep saying this is “brain speaking” the reality of it will strike you. The brain knows it is brain speaking.

20:00  But what it does, unless you are making an extraordinary effort is run automatically and completely out of control (from our view) and it has no sensation of itself. There is nothing personally going on when it (CPOB) runs automatically.

25:00  Its the nature of the conscious part of the brain to run automatically.  The CPOB is like a frisky dog that chases something constantly. (ex. what it sees, hears, and reads)

The only other possibility for the CPOB is it can perform one trick. ( Problem solving of the tangible/physical world that requires abstracts and pictures is excluded) It (CPOB) can sit.

30:00  A few folks are intrigued by the idea man is asleep and needs to awaken. The constant and automatic running of consciousness bothers you and that is what being asleep is. A few folks can make the CPOB sit. (like a dog)

And when consciousness (CPOB) sits it will look up at you (like any friendly dog). You can’t lose eye contact or consciousness is off running automatically again, like any frisky dog.

Consciousness has one trick. It can sit. And what makes it fun is “you” are not doing it. Consciousness makes itself sit but it must keep eye contact. You are either making eye contact or you are asleep.

35:00  The natural part of consciousness does not want to do the one trick. I know, and some of you know the neurological experience of “waking up.”  The first experience is astounding, and the following are delightful.

But the experience is not the “one trick.”  The CPOB (conscious part of the brain) can do one other thing than be asleep (ordinary consciousness, the natural you)  and that is the one trick. It can sit.

40;00  The comment it is hard to get “my mind” to sit is in a sense the CPOB crying wolf. In saying “my mind” it has in a sense shifted the blame. It is curious. Maybe like a carnival’s house of mirrors. It keeps you disoriented.

45:00  Men initially found the voice in their head, (ex. Adam making up God, spirits to account for the voice) interesting and fascinating, but the one thing the voice in their head could not do naturally was a simple dog trick. (Sit)

50:00  And to keep from doing the one trick, it will pretend it is “you.” The ventriloquist (CPOB) becomes the dummy (you). We have no way of knowing what consciousness thinks about this made up “you.”

The CPOB does not run automatically when there is a real, tangible, physical problem that needs solving. Other than that, consciousness does not want to control itself. But it can and will sit as long as it watches itself.

Suggested Title:  “Brain Speaking” is Not Me and No Where

Begin:  If you have tried to bring on the state I describe, by privately, in your head, say, when you catch yourself, “This is Brain speaking/that wasn’t me” versus this is “my brain speaking/that’s me talking.”

And assuming you do it and are meant to succeed, what you get in one absolute flash, is that what is happening in your brain, this sensation of “you” thinking, is an “on demand phenomenon.”

Thoughts are triggered by something outside of you. (ex. President talking about war) Sound waves maybe, but they are translated into words, pictures, a sentence, that trigger a flash on the screen of consciousness.

The thought may trigger another thought, but there is nothing behind it, (it can’t be proven) but the thoughts seem substantial. The feelings seem substantial. But if you keep looking, the thoughts are clearly not substantial.

05:00  This all your life “inner you” that thinks, analyzes, the memories, the criticisms, the great insights into conspiracy theories, that you feel are some sort of great foundation, are just flashes on the screen of consciousness.

And nothing more. It is almost impossible to keep “brain speaking/that wasn’t me” in consciousness. One constantly “falls back” into the sensation “its me talking/thinking.” And no one analyzes where is this “me.” This “me” seems self evident.

10:00  If you let the conscious part of the brain continue to think and talk as if its “me”, external events take on a significance they do not have. It takes away the inner potential to be more “awake/enlightened.”

15:00  There is no way to tell people/conscious part of the brain that heart warming concerns over world injustice is a waste of time. There is a vague awareness of this when someone obsesses/fixates over world injustices.

We of course are not talking about external events, triggered by instinct, (sick/hungry relative) that needs immediate attention.

20:00  Someone starting out to be individually conscious/waking up, the closest you can come to “you” thinking is to continually make themselves say in their head “this is brain speaking.”  Everything else, its not “you” thinking.

If you want to “wake up” there is only one concern and that is your consciousness. Instinctive concerns for family/friends you can take some action. Everything else, (if you are trying to wake up) is a waste of time.

25:00  By privately saying in your head, when you catch yourself, and when the conscious part of the brain is speaking, saying “that was not me” because at the moment, you know, it wasn’t you.

The you that was saying “that was not me” is not the “you” that was thinking whatever you just thought. And I don’t care what the thought was. You folks have done it enough to know, what I am saying is not just theory.

It takes more than one or two looks to see it. Then one day it strikes you that it is all irrelevant. There is only one thing in this universe that should be of interest to someone wanting to wake up.

And that is “what’s going on in the conscious part of the brain.” Because when you get that down, everything is solved.  You have a simple choice. Either at this moment be a “you” or be a dog chasing cars.

The only “you” you can be is “brain here, brain speaking.” Compared to what was going on, (my brain is out of control) the conscious part of the brain focuses.

30:00  Every thought, every sentence, on the screen of consciousness, the conscious part of the brain chases it for a second. It goes arf, it barks (dog chasing cars) at one thought, or one sentence.

But if you catch it, “that wasn’t me/brain speaking” (there both the same) you get a split second of realization. The conscious part of the brain then feels like it is somewhere. It’s interesting, but maybe not important.

If you keep doing this, “brain speaking” everything settles down, stops, and it’s the closest thing to having a thought, having a view, to actually being a “you.” Except now the brain is not lying.

It’s saying “brain speaking/that wasn’t me.”  All the other times, the conscious part of the brain never does that. Not even as a baby when it first begins to talk.  When you see it, it is hard to get a good day’s snooze.

Suggested Title: Make the Talking Part of The Brain Tell the Truth/Not an introduction to Waking Up

Begin:  If you have been trying actively, to follow what I have been describing the last two weeks, it leads to a two step process. Step one is “my mind” is out of control/asleep.

Whatever approach you start with, (Yoga, Zen, Sufi) the reason you cannot remember every breath, remember the name of Buddha, etc. is because “my mind” is out of control/asleep. And it takes a while to realize that.

05:00  Some folks never get past Step One. Picture the brain and the cerebral cortex. The cerebral cortex/conscious part of the brain is where thought and speech exist.  The rest of the brain keeps us alive and it does it without thought.

If you keep looking at the conscious/talking part of the brain as “my mind” -and it is out of control, asleep, and then keep looking past that to, “this is brain speaking and I am out of control”, the difference is unfathomable.

But when you first hear there is a difference between “my mind” is out of control and “brain” speaking I am out of control, It is almost impossible to grasp the difference between the two.

10:00  You are born with the conscious part of the brain (cerebral cortex). When the talking part of the brain first starts talking, it does something that no one notices: The cerebral cortex  pretends to be something else.

(Some of you may be saying to yourself “what the hell are you talking about?”)

Step Two: The conscious part of the brain doesn’t say “this is brain speaking.” The talking part of the mind is not “my mind.”

15:00  Anyone trying to awaken actively (maybe once/twice a day) trying  to bring “my mind/thoughts” under control by remembering Buddha, etc. forces you to confront “my mind” is out of control.

20:00  Remembering yourself, or remembering a mantra, or remembering your breath are simple and a real task. And they make you aware that you can go thru a whole  day without knowing where “my mind/thoughts” were the whole time.

I am guessing “my mind” was still in my head but it was totally out of control. Because I did not remember myself, did not remember my mantra, did not remember my breath, etc.  But that is misguided.

25:00  “My mind” is a whole other reality.  The conscious part of the brain has made up this entirely fictitious mind (my mind) and it keeps you an arms length away from the truth and it is invisible, and its vocal. And its weird.

30:00  Here is a simple statement: “My mind is not under my control.” This is what you should say: “This is the “brain” (talking part of the brain) speaking and quite often I (conscious/talking part of the brain) am out of control.”

Your brain, the brain in your head, talks constantly and shows pictures and lies. Not so much about the physical world but everything else, pretty much a lie. And it never admits it’s “brain” speaking and “I” (talking part of the brain) is out of control.

35:00  If you belong here, when the talking part of the brain says “my mind, my thoughts, my consciousness,” is out of control, and “I” (my mind) is asleep, it seems correct, even after forty years.

But you have got to see, truthfully “my mind” has not been out of control. It is a misspeak.  These are not introductory steps to “waking up.” “You” should ask “you” why don’t I do this?

40:00  Instead of “I (my mind) have been asleep/distracted all day,”  make the brain tell the truth. This is “brain” speaking. And I (the brain) am asleep, identified, and out of control.  “My mind” takes you back to “I” am on the job, “I” am in control.

It’s a super form of sleep/distraction.  Why doesn’t the talking part of the brain, when it first becomes operational, think to itself, wow, how neat, pictures/talking/thinking?” For all we know it may do that a few minutes a day.

45:00  But as soon as one engages in meaningful dialogue, its all about reflections that constitute “my mind/ my thoughts. It is not reflections from the view that this is “brain speaking.” If you look, you know the mind is not a possession, its like one of its operations. (ex. heartbeats, breathing)

Suggested Title: Stockholm Syndrome

Begin:  Whenever mankind finds an unusual and interesting human behavior for a few weeks, enough to give it a name, (ex. Stockholm Syndrome) and as unusual as it seems at first, you can see the same thing going on in the conscious part of the brain.

The Stockholm Syndrome is a term that was coined in the last few decades by police and psychotherapists. It is when someone is kidnapped and begins to cooperate and identify wth their captors.

But it can also happen when anyone is confined, held captive, cut off from everything they know.  ( ex.soldiers, in a foreign land) A few decades ago a  daughter of a billionaire publisher was kidnapped by radical, would be, revolutionists.

Weeks went by without a ransom note. She was later caught on video, holding a carbine,  helping her kidnappers rob a bank. If you can, try to picture the conditions which she was subjected.

Though she was not tortured, she was held captive, cutoff from everything she knew. Can you see and feel the reliance she would have started to feel on her kidnappers? She became a case history for the Stockholm Syndrome.

05;00  Last time I pointed out how money lenders camouflage themselves as used car dealers. Then I pointed out how the conscious part of the brain/thoughts that flash  on the screen, resemble the money lenders.

Some of you immediately recognized what I was pointing to.  Can some of you see the conscious part of the brain/flashes on the screen is subject to a form of the Stockholm Syndrome. It has been kidnapped and identifies with it kidnappers/thoughts on the screen.

10:00  It pretty much blows apart the belief that “the conscious part of the brain” is you. The revolutionists wanted to feed the poor. They did not subject the heiress to extreme torture but she became identified with her captors. The same thing is true if you are sentenced to prison.  Your only contacts are the guards and it is likely you will begin to see them as your parents or protectors.

15:00  If you look, the inner “you” is just flashes on the screen in the conscious part of the brain. The flashes on the screen of consciousness that you take as “you” do not originate in “you.” Consciousness is made to react.

The non thinking part of the brain (the body - the cells) is a complete mechanism made to react. That is how the body stays alive. The conscious part of the brain is made to react in a positive way to the environment and the result is technology.

20:00  But to people like us when the conscious part of the brain is not reacting to anything tangible/substantial/material (ex. someone calls you an idiot) folks like us call it being asleep. To everyone else, “being asleep” is irrelevant.

I am glad the “struggle to awaken” teachings were around but I am still not sure that those who wrote/spoke about it really understood it. Basically “being asleep” is the conscious part of the brain reacting automatically to anything non tangible.

Material problems you are trying to solve are the exceptions. (technology, agriculture, etc.) On good nights when you folks react to something (non tangible) said here, I keep saying, don’t leave it at that. Keep looking.

25:00  I am not trying to discourage you, just trying to get you to see that non tangible things are a form of sleep.  I recommend you look at what I initially saw and thought. And that is “what I saw and thought was totally dependent on something outside of me.”

On the surface that doesn’t sound negative. (ex. Technology, agriculture) But when the conscious part of the brain reacts to something said here on good nights, it is not the awakening, it can trigger something, but the payoff is not the trigger. Keep looking.

30:00  When I first saw “what I thought and saw was totally dependent on something outside me” I thought I have only had one or two actual thoughts my entire life. Where I’m pointing, blows apart “you” are having thoughts.

35:00  You are not having thoughts if everyone of them is a reaction to someone else’s thoughts. That is the heart of the Stockholm Syndrome. (Thoughts that appear in your head and you begin to identify with them.)

These thoughts, which are your kidnappers, have created what constitutes “you.” And realizing/ seeing/ feeling that these thoughts in me are just thoughts in the conscious part of the brain wakes you up a little.

Suggested Title:  Useful - Criticism has a Whine To It

Begin: I would not attempt what I am about to say with the public. I recently received an email regarding the daily feature. Quoting something I had written,  he was saying “I got what you were saying the first sentence.”

Then saying “Boy, you sure can be long winded.” But they did not get what I was saying or they would not have written. The majority of human speech is criticism, complaining, and whining. But  “what’s the point?”

05:00  If you criticize something or the source of something, you didn’t get it. But if you comprehend what someone is saying (maybe shaking your thinking to its foundation) you couldn’t bring yourself to comment.

If it is a deepened understanding, and awakened you a little, it is a fleeting thing, and there is nothing to say to me, to Buddha, or to yourself. Any example of people talking, ninety percent of it, is criticism, whining, and complaining.

10:00  The criticism could be of life or of themselves. The ordinary mind may be able to get a glimpse of this. But the ordinary mind will not comprehend it. The mind is the source of all criticism. Instinct has no criticism of life.

15:00  Our minds say we are imperfect individually and institutions back it up collectively. At the crudest level it makes no sense. It is inconceivable that life would produce something that is critical. But it is more expansive.

20:00  How could life create something that is critical? It is not possible. (I can’t guarantee that). Of course thought comes from the body and instinct, but without thought, there would be no criticism, it would not be possible.  And instinctively speaking, it is still not.

At the very least, criticism is a foreign language to instinct. Criticism is endemic to the mind and saying we know that: been over that, and then me pointing it out; we do not know it fully. (example: internal commentary on sleeping humanity)

25:00 It is simple. If you are being critical, you are asleep. Coming back with the comment saying, “Well for the moment I was asleep”, then it is pretty much more widespread than the moment.  Just stand away from the noise in your head.

There is hardly a sentence spoken/written on this planet that is not some sort of critical remark. I am still puzzled by how many efforts and methods, (I’ve contributed) to make the mind more alert and stable.

Those who had the anomalistic experience of “waking up” and “being enlightened” know that the description the “mind stops/thought stops” does not cover it  And it’s because you are using ordinary thought to describe it to yourself.

30:00 I still find curious what it was like for the first guy who had the experience and tried to talk about it, to himself first. I picture him saying to himself, “What the hell was that, my mind stopped.”

But  It is not that it doesn’t stop or does stop. It is that something else happens. If you are not doing something extraordinary, you are in the hands of these criticisms of life. And these criticisms are not yours. If you are criticizing, you are asleep.

So all you have to do is ‘listen” and if you are criticizing, complaining, or whining you are asleep. “Why is that not the “method?” At the very least it will shake you out of that sleep. Every method has its time and place.

35:00  Criticism, complaint, and whining is the way the mind is organized. It is just there, constantly. It is tied in with “Instinct looks at things the way they are, the mind see things as they could be.”

Seeing things as they could be makes technology possible and survival easier. And with a small step sideways it is complaint, criticism, and whining.  Criticism has a passion to it, and criticism has a whine to it.

40:00  The exceptions being the research and development yellow circuit, intellectuals. The rest of the time the criticism has a whine to it. And I find that useful. I saw it externally before I saw it internally and that is when it became useful.

45:00 “Everyone is whining but me.” But if you are telling yourself that that is not useless criticism, that it is valid criticism, it is still criticism and if you are criticizing, you are asleep. Even if you acknowledge the criticism, you do not know its extent.

Those who have had the anomalistic experience of “waking up” know that criticism, complaining, and whining do not exist in that state. In that state everything is “just right.” And you hate to even describe it as that.

The mind’s job is misunderstood and people think something is wrong. (ex Jewish Beliefs v. Muslim Beliefs, etc.) Criticism, whining, complaining for no reason. Its worse than that and better than that.

50:00  Criticism, complaining, and whining is like water to a fish. What better way to stay awake than to realize how common, how routine, how dense, how slow witted is where you live.
I don’t see how anyone who gets a glimpse can have any faith in what goes on in their head. Exceptions being what we do on our own.

Ends with description of those in the room squinting their eyes, and trying to agree, or being critical of their own progress.. and then saying “ What are you doing? “

Suggested Title: Stalins of the Head

Begin: I want to point out to all of you here and on tape, I am very aware of everything I say. They are not slips of the tongue. And sometimes I say things for a reason and doubt whether the reason got across. No offense to you.

Talking to you folks is the only thing I take seriously in life. (Its not a burden) And I assume you know I do not have a serious cell in my body having to do with religion, nationality, or even nowadays my health.

05:00  Reads: “A True Yet Staggering Fact” “The dumber they are, the greater their taste for power.”  It’s true outside of you, regarding other people, and inside of you, regarding your own brain cells.

“Stalins of the Head” I had a picture of this. Pack animals, instinctively the alpha male, is not usually the smartest. He could be clever for a  wolf, but in some sense he has to be the meanest.

Dictators, maybe illiterate, maybe the clever ones call themselves interim leaders, but you are thinking when you see them, “God, I hope I don’t have to sit beside him on the bus.”  It is not as extreme in elected politics but its still there.

10:00  The dumber they are, the greater their taste for power. I could probably make an ordinary, educated, person temporarily see this. I say it is also true for our brain cells. Geniuses do not have a taste for power.

If I point out, after a quick survey of human history, under normal circumstances,  its the opinionated, parochial, mechanical, nationalistic, views of human life,  that can be seen thru a pinhole, are primarily running your thinking; humanity’s thinking.

15:00  Consider Papa Joe Stalin, who killed twenty percent of the population, (ex. villages 3000 miles away with peasants and children, burned to the ground) because he got nervous about being overthrown, protecting his power.

I picture in my head, commingling with flashes you grew up with, views of life, that right behind your forehead there is a Papa Joe Stalin. With the insincere smile, the little wave, as he stands for hours watching his troops march by.

Consider: The dumber they are, the greater the taste for power. Why else would they kill each other to sit on a throne, or taking over some Podunk Country that is already broke? You can’t imagine an Einstein doing that.

Is not that the same situation in your brain cells, the whole world’s brain cells,  that seem to have the greatest taste for power? Why would things be arranged that the dumbest brain cells are those that naturally seek power?

My everyday brain cells, my everyday view of things, makes the past views, which seemed enlightened at the time, as pinheads compared to what is now the basis of my normal thinking. My older ideas were dumber.

20:00  I did not buy these ideas so how can you explain them. Everyone has the potential brain cells that are a little smarter than the ones in charge now to show up so why don’t the smarter brain cells show up?

Why don’t the brain cells wake up a little bit and maybe see ideas such as this? (Like, Hey what was that in my head?) Why should it be the dumbest brain cells have the taste for power?

Cultures all over the world have traditions when a child becomes a man, especially the males, where one begins (pretty much) to express opinions. It could be as simple as hating the same neighbor as the older males.

25:00  I can see parents shaking their heads as the kid is no longer cute and it is against the law to kill them. When the child hits puberty, starts expressing opinions, he has gone from being cute to a rip roaring, automically fueled, shit ass.

He is expressing opinions. He is expressing his own little Joseph Stalin. I can see it in his eyes. He is becoming a little man. How can you explain it is not the tolerant brain cells in charge but the mechanically, opinionated, Stalins in the head?

Next Item: You cannot be grandfathered into an exemption in criminal law, only the civl law. Civil law is between individuals. (property rights, lawsuits) Criminal law is law enforced on our behalf. (murder)

30:00  People in power exercise power so civli laws and criminal laws change constantly.  A liquor store in a residential community could be grandfathered and allowed to continue operating if it was around as long as a grandfather.

In criminal law, if you were executed for a crime and the powers that be, drop the death penalty, they cannot grandfather you back to life.  Allegorically speaking “being asleep” is not a civil matter, its a criminal matter.

Once guilty, always guilty. You can’t grandfather your way out or weasel your way out of being asleep/distracted/living in a dream.  (ex. maybe it wasn’t  that bad, I was asleep) Once guilty, always guilty.
And the other, that’s not true…. Well, It’s clear to me, so I will stop here.

2577 - Notes on Jan Cox Talk 2577 by Cfish Pressing On

Jan Cox Talk 2577 - August 13, 2000
Copyright Jan Cox, Jan’s Legacy 2016
Notes by Cfish July 2016

Suggested Title: Pressing On (Thinking Beyond Thought)

Begin:  Reads: “If you don’t think beyond your own thoughts you are not using the mind to its full potential.”  A factual statement and if ordinary thought did not immediately reject it, it would not be unexpected to hear “how do you do that?”

05:00  How can you know more than you know? How can you be more conscious than you are at any moment - when you are thinking about being more conscious? (You can’t) This is the sticky  problem thoughts don’t like to deal with.

Unless you get past the point that your thinking is limited to your thoughts, if you can’t find a way to think beyond thoughts you already have, then all of this,  (awakening/enlightenment of the mind, etc) will only be the ephemeral occurrences.

10:00 Believing the mind has the potential “to awaken” may be based on the experience of “waking up,” But few people come to grips with the question “what are you going to use other than thought to think beyond thought?”

15:00  Based on experience, instead of driving yourself crazy to bring on the “extraordinary state of waking up” at will, which I could never do, and have doubts anyone else can do, you relentlessly investigate the experience of waking up.

20:00  You understand the state of awakening happens in the brain and not in the textbooks, and religious books where the descriptions are garbled. But to investigate it you have to think beyond your thoughts, beyond anyone’s thoughts.

If you adopted the model that man is asleep and can awaken, and assuming you have had the experience, then I ask you “what is the experience and what happened?

The point: People do not pursue the nature of what happened.

I would not try to convince anyone of pressing on, but I found continued persistence in ignoring all descriptions (even my own) of waking up/being enlightened, that those descriptions tell me nothing.

25:00  When the abstract starts to make sense to a child’s nascent mind, in a sense their mind has awakened. It is simply, a process six billion people go through where their nascent mind awakens.

This activity, (being asleep and trying to awake, still an apt description)  if you press on, you will see a further awakening of the mind. But their is no further awakening with a mind entangled with thought.

Thought is based on duality and it is all in the mind and nowhere else in the body. The duality of the mind is unknown to instinct and to the rest of the creatures on the planet. Consider: There was no word for think until we could think.

30:00  If you can’t think beyond your own thoughts, you cannot think beyond dualities. (black and white, etc.) A person wired to be attracted to hearing a condemnation about dualistic thinking must somehow get free of it.

The condemnations are all local and do not get to the heart of what is going on. That duality/continual preference is the nature of the mind. How do you know what to say without knowing what not to say? (ex. boss asking if you like the job)

35:00  Dualities are just there. Thoughts at their worst are not completely dumb. There is no such thing as stupid life. (discounting several obvious professions) Thoughts, even the dumb ones will not say to the body “Boy, you sure are a burden.”

So, how can thoughts more fully awaken the mind? There is nothing to use to work on the mind except the mind. Mystics, using the mind to awaken the mind, don’t realize the mootness, the impossibility of their attempts to lift themselves by their bootstraps.

40:00  The safest course of action is to take everything you hear as foolishness. But how do you do that? I can’t tell you that anymore than I can tell you how to think beyond thought.  You can’t plan it. If you plan to do it, you are already serious.

Just press on with thinking beyond thought and thinking beyond thought will happen. Pressing on in a certain way, you can get beyond what you think. (physical laws still apply) Thinking beyond thought is something that resembles waking up.

45:00 I continue to stumble around with descriptions of all this but a better description may be, there is no plan. The closest thing to a plan is that anything you think should be ignored. No belief in grand masters will aid you.

50:00  So how do you get the experience of “waking up” back when it fades?  How can thoughts contribute when thoughts come from the mind? In a sense the second question is the answer. It is a self consuming question.

55:00  How can you think your way out of thought? I considered it from all angles. Physiologically,  looking inside your own head, but you can’t look because the thing you are trying to look at is the thing you are looking with.

60:00 How can you be more conscious at any moment? However you think about it, when you catch yourself being asleep, distracted, etc. what no one sees is them thinking
“you can’t do any better than you can at that moment.”
So answer the question, “ How can I be more conscious than I am right now while thinking about being more conscious?”.
And when you see the answer to that -  well, at least send me a picture of you falling down……

End  63:20

Suggested Title:  Where the Real Hustle Happens.

Begin:  If humans wanted to awaken/ achieve enlightenment/ accomplish whatever This is, they would not need similes, allegories, or metaphors.  Simply pointing out to the mind “the way men are” would do it.

The history of the struggle to awaken/achieve enlightenment is written in metaphors.  And it is based on consciousness conceiving but not actually analyzing the automatic assumption that this knowledge is something you do not presently have.

05:00 This desire to awaken spurs us on. But if you look, the thinking and talking part of the brain,  unless it is thinking and talking about the physical world, where you can check it out (the fire is hot, the ice is cold) what the mind says cannot be relied on.

The ability to think and talk is the same talent that puts man into a dream. Maybe that is the humor of the situation, and that is why we have to think and talk in similes, metaphors, and allegories.

Last time I mentioned the momentary reality of the conscious part of the brain. And that the conscious part of the brain is the source of all speech. And when speech first started, the thinking and talking had no name, so it made up a name for itself.

10:00  But the conscious part of the brain had to know it made up the words to call itself, (ex. spirit, soul, mind, I, ) So why did the conscious part of the brain do it?  There is only one reason. It takes man’s attention off the conscious part of the brain.

There seems to be a need for an example outside of us. When you first realize what I am talking about, it makes your brain smile. Why do you folks like catching on to this? Why does it have to be done like this?

15:00  Pressing on, looking at the used car business and advertising.  Advertising, that appears to be from a used car dealer, is advertising how a customer needs and deserves a new car. And the only reason you don’t have a good used car is bad credit.

But if you continue to look, it is obvious it is not a used car dealer, it is a finance company.  They may call themselves A1 Cars but they are still in the finance business and that is what they are selling.

20:00  Life is doing it and it is serving a purpose or it would have been a one shot deal. No one is really hurt. They make money and you get a used car.  But if you look, the conscious part of the brain is doing that to you constantly.

These thoughts constantly pop up in your head, one triggers another, but what the thoughts appear to be doing, (ex. trying to sell you a car) is not their purpose. Thoughts are in the finance business. (ex. distractions, distortions)

25:00  You can’t say these thoughts are harming anyone. They do take up the whole screen of consciousness, visually and aurally, but it is a harmless fraud. But notice that it’s like a finance company dangling a car in front of you to sell you a loan.

30:00 Tonights point, allegories aside, when the conscious part of the brain is not problem solving in the tangible/material world, the conscious part of the brain is hustling you. The conscious part of the brain is putting the shuck on me.

33:22
