Suggested Title:  An Empty Canyon But with Echoes That Cannot Be Explained

Begin:  All of you should be at a point where everything you hear answers everything.  A few comments hit me and two of them you hear everyday.  I really do not remember the lead in on the first one I want to talk about.  It was a follow up discussion on some business deal.

But the punchline was “I didn’t want them to think I was an idiot. “   The phrase is as common as can be.  And if you have not used the phrase you have certainly thought it.  I don’t know if any of you think about it this way but the collective mind is a real thing.  We are all plugged into it and we can not drop the service like we can a telephone contract.

The collective mind is a bit tricky.  They are like pods that float.  For example, with us folks sitting here, there is a collective mind.  If we all got up and went outside to sit there would be another collective mind.   Collective minds are limitless in their size and shape and they maintain an equilibrium.

05:00  The comment, “My plan going in was to be prepared so I would not look like an idiot.”  Everyday ordinary minds understand the phrase but it explains nothing.  (We are talking intangibles here.) Forget everything and look at that comment.  It explains nothing but it also explains everything.

There is a collective mind of man. Its a covering around the complete planet.  (You have versions that range from neighborhoods -  all the way to planet versions.)  And in the operations of the collective mind it maintains an equilibrium.

And part of the collective mind’s equilibrium is man wanting to explain themselves.  Everyone’s mind is plugged into the collective mind and it has always been that way.  The equilibrium at the heart of the collective mind is the notion of people trying to convince others “I know what I am doing.”  (Its like a fart in a hurricane.)

And why do they do that?  Because they do not know what they are doing.  Another intangible everyday comment that explains nothing but it also explains everything is “How can we make them believe us when we tell them what happened?”  I heard the phrase at the end of a science fiction movie about aliens and their spacecraft.

It was the punchline to the movie.  But why would you consider that a problem?  Getting people to believe the unbelievable is a non-physical problem.  If you went to the newspapers or the police they would want some proof.  Another example is someone spending two days in the presence of God.

10:00  Getting people to believe you is part of the maintenance of the equilibrium of the collective mind.   But these non physical problems (getting someone to believe you, not wanting people to think you are an idiot) can be cured.  Keep them to yourself.  Don’t tell anybody.  Don’t mention it.

Do you think any ordinary mind on this orbiting prison could see this?   Its the nature of the collective mind - ordinary minds have to tell someone.  Seeing a flying saucer or talking to God - and wanting others to believe you - its a balance; a maintenance of the collective mind.

People have to tell other people what happens.  It gets interesting to me at the individual level.  Its why people want to talk about themselves.  It maintains a collective facade.  Why do humans do it?  Why do humans want to do it?  Some of you may be past it.

But any critical comment on someone else’s ideas is the collective mind telling you “the kind of guy you are.“  Not talking about yourself may still be considered a struggle but the “belief” that talking on your phone is creative, that you are an idiot, or nobody’s fool - it stops everything - you can’t wrestle with it.

15:00  Being “boxed in” ( one place I did not take it last week ) is any explanation for yourself.  Because there is no explanation for yourself.  And there is no explanation for anything non physical. (Period)  History, for example, seems real.

But I could make up a story about the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages being in direct competition with the temporal kingdoms.  And this made for a lot of debauchery and intrigue both within the church and temporal kingdoms.  It is even entertaining to me and I made it up.

20:00  I am not making fun of the collective mind.  We are all plugged into it.  But when the collective mind begins to explain anything non tangible ( non-physical, you cannot set it on a table ) for example history or religion it explains nothing.

Though the stories of early religions may sound insightful,  they are creations of the mind and non tangible creations of the mind have no explanation.  Physical creations like the wheel or a fire can be explained .  The wheel works and a fire has pragmatic explanations.

25:00  People have been pondering questions about life after death and history for thousands of years and explanations have not progressed and not one human can see or hear it.  (Or everyone knows and life forces us to pretend its otherwise.)

But if you keep looking at these questions about God, life after death, and the meaning of history and you look at the part of the ordinary mind that is still plugged into the collective mind and you believe there is an explanation - then you believe you are refining the explanation.

30:00  You may feel that yogi so and so may be worth a look.  Maybe he has a more refined explanation but the  explanations are never fully explained.  If you look for an explanation for anything non-physical you are boxed in.

It seems at times you have a handle on yourself ( we are not talking physical - losing weight ) but instead of having a handle on yourself you are boxed in.  I know some of you may hear what I am saying and its like your mind opens up like a flower.

But then its like the other six billion cows (the collective mind) may feel as if there is an opening - something untoward is going on in the middle of the herd.  And they will all lean toward your way and not very much and you are back trying to explain the unexplainable.

35:00  A few years back I thought up a name for this thing.  I was going to call it "The Third Way.”   But then my understanding increased and I forgot about it.  The collective mind likes choices.  Its either this explanation or another explanation.

Hence the “third way” but I can’t explain it.

40:00  You may believe there is some explanation for being distracted or a sleep.  Its either this explanation or another explanation.  When you leave tonight there may only be two choices for a few of you.  He is either right or its bullshit. That is why I came up with the "third way."

But I can’t explain it.  In a sense the “third way" is waking up but when you see it, its no way.  It cannot be explained.  Zen, Sufism, or ideas you have had (which are good for you) -  the reason for these great insights are to slap you out of the Brahm’s lullabies you sing to yourself.

But to believe a non tangible explanation explains anything you are back to an imaginary structure and anybody can come along and add something to it.    46:35

Suggested Title: Scrapping the Self Criticism of Being Asleep  (Its Beyond Belief)

Begin: My civilian news tonight is there is an advertising campaign for a phone service where the high class advertisers (Madison Ave. etc. probably doing high class drugs-not Alabama street drugs) are pushing their phone service on the basis that talk is creative. The advertisers are thinking “How can we get them to buy more?”

We all know its Life doing it, but still, “What’s the point in pulling a con on yourself?”  Last time I mentioned an email correspondence from someone intelligent enough that I responded back. We exchanged several emails and I would respond with “Do you notice so and so?”  And she would respond that I misunderstood or it did not apply to her.

I then emailed her a “by the way - do you notice your responses to me are always responses “that I misunderstood or that it did not apply to her.” and I look forward to to how your next rejection will take place."  She emailed me back and said “well - I guess you boxed me in.”   It was a compliment.

Her attitude was if I am boxed in “What can you do?’’   And there in those few words are two whole new schools of awakening.  And there are always two views of the same thing.  Boxing yourself in from our view is “you are trying to change your state of mind. "

05:00   Every form of self criticism is an attempt to "box yourself in."   Instead of blanket statements I am trying to get you folks to consider on your own, “Is there any form of worthwhile criticism?”  Past a certain point in the road (and its not true until that certain point in the road) the most efficient question is to question the fact which seems to be the most unquestionable.

And if you folks are still showing up and listening you are far enough along.  Past a certain point in the road self criticism serves no purpose and can begin to be detrimental.  (meaning a waste of time.)  Its the illusion of doing something.  (ex. Yeah I may not be awake or continually alert but I am on the case )

Its not just a waste of time because you can waste time without trying to wake up.  Its the feeling I am doing something.  Being pretentious, stumbling, or myopic are examples that you may not be awake and you may be more alert to it and all that sounds fine until you think about it.

But once past that certain bend in the road - once you see it - its the nail that keeps a man’s foot in a certain place.  (You believe you are making useful effort.)  Questions about life after death and why there is only one shoe in the road are not the questions.  The real question is “self criticism - what the hell you doing?”

10:00  No one would do anything (ex lose weight etc.)  unless they were involved in self criticism.  That is self evident.  But people die without questioning “self criticism.”   Most people do not get past the self criticism bend in the road.  There is the “boxing in” of oneself.  Self criticism is not metaphysical.

When someone says “yeah I’m not awake but I am more alert to it”  that is all mental.  Its not behavior.  Past the certain point in the road ( I am distracted and I don’t like it internally which is self criticism) you do not know why you are asleep.

15:00  You do not know if you are asleep.  Its a sleeping person telling you - you are asleep.  The only reason  any of us here and on tape could laugh at that is because it’s not funny at all.   If you take on the questions of “Self Criticism” (its verbally limited) “Where did it come from?  “Is there such a thing and does it serve some purpose?”

Self criticism is at the heart of all this.  In our case we are trying to do better or change in a mental way.  Instead of losing body fat (behavior) we are trying to lose intellectual blubber. (distracted  etc.)  In a sense somebody losing their intended weight comes closer to waking up.   Even if they never heard of “being asleep”

Working on waking up past a certain point in the road - well - you understand it less when you “believe” you understand it more.  Pressing on in a certain manner and never stopping and turning around and looking at what you “think” you are doing.  I can look at you and see me and its self evident.

20:00  You still believe you are asleep but you do not know what it means.  Forget being awake.  You do not know what being awake means either.  My major breakthrough was when I realized I did not know what being asleep was.  And I even wrote and talked about knowing what being asleep was.

I realized that the prevailing view of folks like us was knowing the problem (being asleep) but not knowing the solution.  Communes, monasteries, work groups throughout history and right now - their goal is waking up or enlightenment.  And I give them credit not one of them would say they are awake.

Some may hedge it and say I am not awake all the time.  But no one would say the are permanently awake unless they are insane.  Folks involved with this do not fully understand the goal though some may have had the “experience” of waking up.

25:00  Folks like us believe we understand what being asleep is.  But believing you are asleep is believing you recognize the aroma of being asleep.  Do not blame anyone for the term asleep.  It has to be called something.  You could call it state X and state Y.  We don’t like state X and we want state Y.

There is no escape from this feeling that you know and recognize the manifestations of being asleep.  There is no way to know if you are asleep (whatever that is) and there is the crack.  Its a sleeping person telling you you are asleep.  I am not saying you are asleep or not.  I’m just saying there is no way to know if you are or not.

30:00  The other view is I can’t be boxed in because I am the box and I am the in.  Both have the same results.  Its all in the head.  And to believe you can get outside the box is reinforcing the box.  You feel like you are doing something and you are actually doing the opposite.  (Believing you can get outside the box)

The overall suggestion is (I do it myself) is to try to scrap self criticism.  Don’t deny or resist self criticism.  Its a mental thing.  Its possible to resist food (self criticism- self improvement) but its not possible to resist being asleep.  Its logical to resist being asleep but  its not possible to resist it or not to resist it.

35{00  Scrap everything you know about this.  (Fuck them and Fuck me)  If you defend yourself - your done for.  If you don’t defend yourself - your done for.  To stop any action (In our case our mind being stumbling, asleep, pretentious, and myopic) you have to take action.  You can’t wish it away.

This represents a small problem.  You do not know what the opposite of self criticism is.  The opposite of self criticism is …….

Suggested Title:  Observations of a Lone Wolf

Derek's suggested title : Alpha Male protecting pack-thought

Begin:  Last time I mentioned that there was a distinct and exact parallel reflected in the observed behavior of a hero and one who has a more enlightened understanding of life.  (ex. does not talk about himself,  does not steal etc.)  When qualities of a hero are observed in a leader or a warrior king, it is a reflection of how they see and understand life.  The leader or warrior king can at some point merge in the external world.

These hero warriors, kings, leaders, and adventurer’s actions seem to come natural.  They do not attack or kill children.  They are brave and fair.  They let others surrender with dignity.  But being a hero is not about being awake.  Its is about how you treat people.  Its all observed behavior.  Considering the alpha male in the hero model its just not about brute strength and cunning.

05:00  Another aspect I find of interest is to picture the alpha male wolf.  (There are alpha females also.)  An alpha male wolf is usually out front of the pack.  If the pack senses danger the pack stops and when the alpha male turns around he is all by his lonesome.  Its hormonal to be an alpha dog and he is the one who runs out front to check for danger.

For example the pack may stumble onto another pack while out looking for food.  The two alpha males will check each other out.  Sometimes there is a skirmish.  Sometimes its just a whole lot of smelling and one of the alpha males will submit.  “Something goes on”  (maybe it is the aroma of hormones) a communication of sorts, an aroma of fear possibly and one of the alpha male wolves will submit.

The pack can observe and know if their alpha male has submitted or not.  I guess the whole pack could be involved but usually its is just the alpha male.  I see this as a reflection of what goes on in life.  Historically two leaders could fight instead of two armies.  Two kings could send their best warriors to fight and one of the warriors would either submit or die and that would be the end of it for that day.

10:00  As always I see everything that goes on in human life as a metaphor or better yet an external reflection of what goes on in the human mind.  I can look anywhere and see it.  For example human’s electing a king is an absolute reflection of what goes on in the the part of the brain that produces thought.  I am saying the part of the brain that produces thought has an alpha male.  Now back to the story.

Picture the two alpha males wolves rushing out to possibly a potentially dangerous conflict.  They sniff around.  They pose and snarl.  Their packs are behind them and the pack can also see and smell.  I am assuming you can see their is some sort of communication going on and when one of the alpha males wolves submits and withdraws - the other wolf knows he has won.

The communication that went on  between the two alpha wolves at the instant of submission - the pack (outsiders) did not know about.  And it  is truthful to say that it was only the alpha wolf that submitted who knew what was communicated when he submitted.  Now picture two alpha male king warriors.  And to get the most out of this keep juxtaposing the pictures of the three examples.

(Two alpha male wolves,  Two warrior kings,  The great plane of human consciousness where something similar goes on - though the last one is hard to picture.)

15:00  The communications by the alpha male wolves are hormonal, instinctive, and non verbal.  The second picture of the two alpha male warrior kings possibly meeting on a great field with armies at the ready.  (I have no history to back this up - lets suppose there is no couriers or emails involved.)  And as outsiders we can see them as humans communicating.  (Same way the pack sees the pack leader communicating)

As humans there may not be a whole lot of smelling going on but we may be able to see some body language as the two warrior alpha male kings meet.  (posing, moving lips)  And we assume they are talking - singular to humans.  Its very likely from the pack’s view (outsiders view) one of the Alpha male warrior kings will submit.  (maybe a slouch)  And the people (outsiders) will know what happened.

In some way one of the warrior kings talked the other warrior king out of it.  But who really knows what was said.  And a true warrior king (brave and fair, lets others surrender with dignity, does not brag) would not tell anyone.  And pushing the metaphor further if the relationship is “true and right” between the king and the people, the people would not ask.  They would respect the king too much to ask and would not want to know.

20:00  In the external world of warrior leaders (Charlemagne, Caesar, etc.) at a time of celebration of victory for the people no sober citizen would ask a warrior leader how he pulled off the victory.  I picture the same thing going on in the human brain.  That there is some part of the brain that acts like the alpha male and it protects us.  But from what?  Minimally its the out of control daydreams and flow of automatic thoughts.

I say that what’s been called being more awake is that on the great plain of human consciousness you have an alpha male warrior king part of the brain that protects another part of the brain. The alpha male part of the brain protects the common populous of consciousness.  Its the king bird that protects the flock.  (Sufi Parliament story)  The alpha male part of the brain has more of an understanding of what life is about.

And this alpha male part of the brain just goes about its business and trying to explain it is foolish.  From another view eventually you do not even ask.  (Why did I change this?  Why do I do so and so.?)  It just comes natural.  Another level - children never ask their parents “How come your my parents?”  I say there is a hierarchy in the part of the brain that produces thought that no one takes specific note - “Whats going on?”

25:00  Even people with "hands on” experience looking at the part of the brain that produces thought do not take specific note “Whats going on?”   Some folks look at it from the implausible to the foolish.  (ex. gift from God, the straightening out of some problem, a correction of consciousness)  I say the common populous of consciousness is being protected by an alpha male part of the brain.

Its not like you are being assaulted by anyone else.  Maybe old man death, but if death is inevetable you probably should not call it an assault.  The assault is in your brain.  (Daydreaming, the automatic flow of thoughts, etc.)  Being sick is just old man death calling.  Its not like you can be protected physically from anything.  You are being protected by an alpha male piece of consciousness and the rest of the brain does not ask “How do you do it?”

2521_050500  ( notes by DC  feb 2007 )

Continues reading from “ The News”

00:00:49  Q:  What is it that all men live by, yet they don't know what it is?

               A:  Their self.

00:01:05  It is through the medium of the self that each person's actions, reactions, thoughts and feelings are determined, but if you undertake to find and identify it, you come up with a handful of smoke and reflections....even an enlightened man cannot locate his self.  Isn't this suggestive of something normally never considered?  Don't send Cinderella in search of Santa Claus.

00:01:51  The mystic's migraine:  Once you realize what being awake and being asleep is, the only way you can tolerate not being awake is to be DEEP asleep.

00:02:15  What is being asleep other than your thoughts being so totally immersed in themselves that there is not even the momentary impression of a YOU that is having them?

00:02:50  What can possibly be enlightenment other than your permanent recognition of the simple, obvious fact that thoughts are nothing but thoughts, no matter what they may think about?

00:04:28  Repeats above and adds:  There it is.

00:06:01  A stomach is right now;  lungs are this very instant and neurons are this exact moment;  that is, except for those neurons involved in the production of thoughts.

00:06:25  ...and thoughts are liberated when they realize that there is nothing that they can think about themselves without instantly turning into the thoughts and just as instantly forgetting that they have just done so.

00:07:14  Thoughts are the only thing that can't look at themselves without turning into what they're looking at while totally unaware of what just happened.  There it is again.

00:08:30  It's all right to think "I don't like the view from here," as long as you realize that 'here' is 'you' and the view is your 'I'.

00:08:56  A real mystic is never completely satisfied.

00:09:56  As the seeker approaches the Secret, he begins to realize his mind is NOT out of his control.  The fact is that his mind says that it is not under HIS control, having verbally changed itself from itself into a sensation of his self.  A man's thoughts and feelings are always under control -- under their own control.

00:10:52  Enlightened indifference.

00:19:04  The mind is an unfinished piece of business.

00:23:00 This [seeking] is all going on in the world of thought...Eventually, you have to turn your thought on the nature of you thinking about wanting to be awake, asleep or enlightened.

00:24:10  What is the thing that apparently guides, controls, directs each man's life, and yet no one knows what it is; and it's their self.  No one knows the self, no one can.  And if you know that, you're awake.

00:32:00    Secret of Life.

00:34:39  ...being conscious without the support of thought, without the necessary support of thought.  Beyond that, IS knowing the secret.

00:35:26  The secret is:  knowing what This is.  The secret is knowing the nature of why you want to know 'the secret'.

00:45:45  Everyone started out knowing, then start adding stuff to themselves.

00:47:48  Watch a six-year old kid...that is how the other 6 billion people cope with being dissatisfied....covering up their awareness of what's going on.

00:59:55  The master stroke [kudos to the guy who invented the idea of God,  the pinnacle of distraction/delusion.

01:05:23  Imaginary worlds:  how better to make life interesting?

The aim of all this, what Enlightenment does is return life to its rightful state of boredom.

Suggested title: Every characteristic of an enlightened man is unnatural

Begin:  I was considering (from experience with all this) how much there was in common with the ordinary views and characteristics  (culturally, historically, literally,  both fiction and non fiction) of heroes and those of a person of a different consciousness.  (An awake consciousness)

(I am not holding myself up or anyone else up as a model here.)  No matter what part of the world, heroes are all described in a traditional sense. They are described as being soft spoken,  they do not talk about themselves,  they do not steal,  etc.  And in the descriptions, the heroes’ qualities seem to be effortless.

05:00  When I began to consider this model of a hero and their qualities  (Do not steal,  Do not talk about themselves, etc.) and how they parallel with an enlightened consciousness, I began to have my doubts and that is when this model began to swell up in me.

( I am not insinuating these model heroes were awake.)  Mystical systems have all sorts of rules, suggestions, and absolutes.  (ex.  An awakened man does not talk about himself.)

10:00  Even if it’s true an awakened man does not talk about himself, if you practice it, you don’t have it.   If you model yourself after a hero you don’t have it.   Ninety nine percent of the mystics start out with a model. These ideas and characteristics of traditional heroes hit many (both mystic and ordinary) as being correct.

And the reason I see it strikes people as being correct is because it is at a deeper, cellular level.  This hero example is just one of many examples.  These things that strike humans as being correct are not religious or cultural or mystic.

The example of a hero who does not talk about himself just rings true.  And for someone with an interest in all this, it is not a struggle.  You just lose interest in talking about yourself.

15:00  I assume you know that “Losing interest in talking about yourself” is a part of waking up.  And I assume you folks know “the more you understand the less you have to say. “   And I am assuming you are seeing the “great parallel” between the characteristics of being a hero and to what “waking up” is.

20:00  The cellular level runs us and all of life.  And at the cellular level there are no morals.  In the animal world it is pretty much eat or be eaten.  (ex.  Bears, lions, wildebeest, salmon,)  And the most efficient way to get a meal is to steal it from another animal.

It expends less calories.   So basically at the cellular level (where our ideas of heroes attributes ring true - like not stealing) we are all thieves.

25:00  Stealing is a holdover from instinct.  But life has also given us a model (a hero) of someone who does not steal.  It is brain splitting that we can even fathom heroes who are nothing like humans.  Every feature of a hero is unnatural.

When we bring our attention to the notion that the whole world is full of thieves and then you realize it is also in you (this propensity to steal) regardless of religion or culture - well - “there it is”  Its all in you.

30:00  You don’t need a monk or a monastery or Zen.  There is really no word for it.  And it is almost impossible to see.  But just turn your attention on it.  Neuralize it.  "All men have a propensity to steal and all men have a notion of a hero and a hero never steals.”

This is what life is doing in us.  (notions of heroes and propensity to steal)  And  wanting to be awake is wanting to be free of “what life is doing in us.”  But its hard to get free of nature.

We can fathom heroes that are nothing like humans and they are the exact opposite of us and no one notices.  Every characteristic of a hero is unnatural.  (We go to movies and stare and identify with heroes.) Every characteristic of an enlightened man is unnatural.

Consider for a moment your options.  Are we trying to escape nature?  But where in the universe are you going to go?  In your head one part of consciousness does not like the other part of consciousness.

Maybe on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays we can consider the model of a hero.  Then on Tuesday, Thursday and a Saturday we can consider the model of how we can harm the environments.  And on Sunday we can neuralize what door did we take to get into this universe?

35:00  The instinctive thief and the notion of the hero are both in your brain.  “But,” you say,  “I don’t like it!”  And there you have it - the symptom is the problem.

35:24
